He saw them as more affordable than Polish labor and hired them for his factory. However, he soon developed a strong protective feeling for them.

He provided accommodations for the Jews he employed. He faced two arrests for participating in the black market and bribing Nazi officers but was released quickly each time. He was also briefly detained for kissing a Jewish girl on the cheek.
